rain barrel project
I told my girlfriend Kara, that we should collaborate on a project sometime and she came back to me with a rain barrel project. What is a rain barrel project you ask? Well it’s a project that was created by the Regional Storm Water Collaborative (RSWC) to promote the use of rain barrels throughout the Ohio River Valley area via an entertaining and high profile initiative – RAIN BARREL ART!
This project is perfect for us. Kara works in the environmental field and I am a designer by trade. It’s like they created the project for us. We sent our application and design concept in last month and we received word today that out design has been selected to be part of the Rain Barrel Program. Here is a look at what we sent them.
We are an artist and an environmentalist sharing our story of the
beauty and importance of water. To us, all natural elements, including water, paint a picture of artistic beauty in our world that we have a responsibility to protect and sustain.
As an environmentalist, there are many elements and experiences that have shaped and influenced what I care about. One of those elements is water, and especially my close connection growing up close to Lake Michigan. I am driven in my career to my responsibility to the environment, and I care for the environment because it’s part of who I am.
As an artist and designer, I appreciate the beauty of water. It can be used to convey many ideas such as power, purity and solace. I’m always looking for themes and inspiration for my work, and water has always been a wonderful source for both.
Summary of Design:
Imagine it’s a beautiful summer day and you’re sailing on the wide open water. The sun warms your skin as the wind guides your sails. There’s nothing but blue for miles in all directions. The stresses of everyday life melt away as you are enveloped in natures solace. When the day is over, you sit on the beach and watch the sun rays dance across the crystal clear surface as day transitions into night. In this world everything is perfect.
Without water, this world wouldn’t be possible. A World Awaits is our way of representing that. The water collected by this barrel is essential, powerful, beautiful, comforting and makes life possible.
Concept – A World Awaits
We should be picking up our rain barrel sometime in the next week. I will document the progress of the project for a future blog. Also give Kara some love over at her blog, Lake Effect Life.
EDIT – The rain barrels are due at the end of March and will then be displayed at the Cincinnati Zoo for 3 weeks.
